Change of Per$pective

The current financial crisis has given us all plenty of reason to think about money. Much that we’re exposed to in the form of reporting, commentary, punditry, policy, etc. is tinged with negativity…panic even. This is a dramatic departure from the halcyon days (superficial though they were) of just a few years ago when money was this culture’s favorite accessory and object of adoration. Remember “bling?”
I experienced an unexpected and positive change in my own perspective on the subject the other night; and it didn’t come from the media. It came from a conversation I had with a man who knows firsthand what money can do.
The man was Vincent Stehle, the Program Director for the Nonprofit Sector Program at the Surdna Foundation
. In February Surdna’s Board met to approve 73 grants totaling $8,525,000. We were at an intimate professional gathering hosted by a mutual friend and I felt like sharing. “I’ve been trying to change my view of money,” I told Vince. I explained how growing up I’d developed the idea that money is something that true artists never have, something spiritual aspirants renounce, something that leads to grasping and corruption. Recently, I’d been reevaluating this idea as a romantic notion that worked for me as a poor college kid and 20something, but wasn’t such a smart attitude for a woman with a business that’s out to change the world.

Vince offered his insight. He’d just been to a conference where some of the most progressive economic thinkers in the country were gathered to talk about giving. Money, they agreed, is nothing more than potentiality. In and of itself it is neither negative nor positive. It is neutral, but charged with a harnessed energy. “What people dislike about money is actually profit maximizing behaviors,” Vince explained, “Money is just the symbol for these bad behaviors.”
The Last Boy Scout full movie For a man who releases the harnessed potential of money for people with a dream, a vision, and a plan to change their communities, this must be an obvious insight. He has a wholly different relationship with money. He stewards it.
Moving from the idea of saving and spending money to the idea of stewarding it is a small verbal twist, but a big mental leap. It imparts a sense of personal responsibility and maturity, not often associated with the subject. Money is not something we own. It is something we release, or constrain. Like energy it cannot be destroyed or created. It just shifts. The more we shift the energy to the places where it can best be utilized for the greater good, the better off we all are.
